Type Specimen Novel

The goal of this project was to research a typeface, and create a specimen novel analyzing all aspects of that typeface. This involved in depth research about how and when the typeface was created and what it is intended for. Along with this, we were to choose a story that related to the history of our typeface and use that aesthetic of that story for the visual aspects of our novel (photographs or decorative elements).

The typeface I chose was Electra. The novel I connected with this typeface was Fahrenheit 451, because of the fact that my typeface was created primarily for use in body text of novels or large blocks of text telling a story or giving information. The banning of books, novels, and knowledge in general is the theme i took on as I designed my book, as I drew from the themes in Fahrenheit 451.

After producing the book I made laser cut marks and actually burned pages and parts of the book to push the visual elements a step further and make the type specimen more interesting to look at. This went along with my themes of censorship that I got from the novel Fahrenheit 451. Throughout the book, I tried to display the typeface in as many different situations as possible, giving a range of point sizes, multiple weights, and the full typeface set with symbols at the end.
